Weedon Road bus lanes will operate 24hrs from today (Monday 3/8/2020) to encourage active travel in Northampton. This is great news for cyclists and pedestrians as the local authority look to improve active travel following funding of £351k by the Government from the Active Travel Emergency Fund.

Whilst this is clearly great news and a step in the right direction for greener and more COVID-19 friendly travel, it could present drivers who have been used to the ‘Hours of Operation’ bus lanes with a problem if they don’t spot the changes. In August 2019 Councillors agreed on the introduction of CCTV enforcement cameras to monitor illegal use of bus lanes in Northampton town centre with anyone caught being issues a £60 fine. Locations of the CCTV equipment is still to be confirmed but with this being a new initiative it should not be a surprise to see Weedon Road getting these.

This is also important to take note of if you are due a driving test in Northampton as incorrect use of a bus lane could result in a serious fault and failing your driving test.

All learners with Driving Skills Academy take multiple routes into and out of the town centre to ensure they are able to read all signage / road markings, choose the correct lane and move safely into it to continue their journey.
