Mentoring for Driving Instructors in Northamptonshire
Structured support from day one through training, qualification and beyond.
One of the biggest challenges for trainee and newly qualified driving instructors is not passing the tests, but developing the confidence, consistency and professional standards needed to succeed long-term.
At Driving Skills Academy, mentoring begins from the moment you start training and continues through your development as a driving instructor.
That mentoring is shaped by academy founder Chris Barker, who is a fully qualified ADI, a Level 8 diploma-qualified instructor trainer, and has also completed the DVSA Fleet trainer course.
Why Mentoring Matters
Passing the ADI tests is only the beginning. Many new instructors struggle with confidence, consistency and applying what they have learned in real lessons.
Confidence
Build confidence when teaching real learners.
Consistency
Develop reliable lesson structure and delivery.
Risk Management
Learn how to manage mistakes and safety in real time.
Professional Growth
Move beyond qualification into long-term development.

Frequently Asked Questions About Mentoring
Is mentoring included as part of the training?
Yes. Mentoring is built into the full development pathway from the moment you start training. It is not an optional extra or something that only happens after qualification. You are supported throughout your training, trainee licence stage (if taken) and early months as a qualified instructor.
How long does mentoring last?
Mentoring typically spans around 2.5 years, covering your full journey from initial training through to becoming a confident and established driving instructor. The level of support naturally evolves as you gain experience.
Do I still receive support after qualifying as an ADI?
Yes. One of the biggest benefits of this approach is continued support after qualification. Many new instructors find this stage the most challenging, and ongoing mentoring helps you build consistency, confidence and strong learner outcomes.
Is mentoring one-to-one or group based?
The separate 20-hour trainee-licence development programme is delivered entirely one-to-one with your trainer. Wider mentoring includes both individual support and group-based development, giving you personal guidance alongside opportunities to learn from other instructors through shared sessions and discussions.
What does mentoring actually involve?
Mentoring includes practical and structured support such as:
• in-car coaching sessions
• lesson reviews and feedback
• reflective discussions
• guidance on real learner situations
• ongoing development support
The focus is always on helping you apply your skills in real-world lessons.
Do I have to take a trainee licence to receive mentoring?
No. The trainee licence is optional. Some people choose to gain experience while teaching learners, while others prefer to continue training without it. Mentoring support is available in both approaches.
Will mentoring help me pass my Part 3 test?
Yes. Mentoring plays a key role in preparing for the Part 3 test by helping you develop the teaching skills, lesson structure and risk management required. More importantly, it helps you build the skills needed beyond the test itself.
What makes this mentoring different from other training providers?
Many training providers focus only on helping you pass the qualification tests. This approach focuses on long-term development, supporting you beyond qualification and helping you build a sustainable career as a driving instructor.
Is mentoring suitable for complete beginners?
Yes. Most trainees begin without any teaching experience. Mentoring is designed to support you from the very beginning and guide you step by step as you develop your skills.
What if I am unsure whether this career is right for me?
That’s completely normal. The best next step is to book an information call where we can talk through:
• the training process
• what the role involves day-to-day
• earning potential
• whether it is the right fit for you
There is no pressure, just a chance to get clarity.
