How do I share my driving licence with someone like my driving instructor?
It is very important that your share your driving licence with your driving instructor before your first driving lesson.
In June 2015 the paper counterpart of the driving licence was abolished and driving licences now consist of just the photo card. Endorsements, penalty points and driving bans are no longer recorded on driving licences, but instead are only accessible online.
For insurance purposes, before your first driving lesson your Instructor is required to check your full licence details to see the vehicles you’re allowed to drive, and to check for penalty points and disqualifications.
The consequences for not checking the above are very serious and this procedure is in place to protect you, your instructor and the general public.
Follow these simple steps to share your driving licence before the 1st lesson

Here are details on how you can share you driving licence with someone like your Driving Instructor or a Car Hire Company
- Grab the things you will need
To be able to share your driving licence you will need three things:
– Your Driving Licence Number
– Your National Insurance Number
– The Postcode on your Driving Licence
- Visit the .gov website
- Click the Green ‘Start Now’ button
- Enter your details
– Enter your Driving Licence Number (ignoring anything after the space) and Postcode that is on your driving licence along with your National Insurance Number in the boxes.
– Tick the ‘I agree’ box
– Click the ‘View now’ button
- Select ‘Get your Check Code
- Click the Get a code button

To share your licence information with your Driving Instructor or someone else you need to provide them with
– the check code and
– last 8 characters (ignoring any characters after the space) of your driving licence number
Your code will be valid for 21 days.
Before Your First Driving Lesson
In advance of your first driving lesson your Instructor will view your licence details on line. Be aware that your Instructor may save a screenshot as evidence of the licence entitlement check.
On Your First Driving Lesson
Please note you should also produce your photo card licence for ID inspection on your first lesson. It is your responsibility to provide your Instructor with proof that you have a valid licence to drive, before the commencement of your first lesson. If you fail to provide this proof, your Instructor is entitled to refuse to conduct the lesson but still charge you.
