At Driving Skills Academy we’re more than just teaching people how to drive, we’re also passionate about road safety which is why when Driving Instructor Chris Barker was asked to represent the concern of parents at The Abbey Primary School on Winchester Road he jumped at the chance.
The Highway Code gives some very clear guidance as to where you can and cannot park here https://www.highwaycodeuk.co.uk/parking.html but specifically relevant to this area near the school the following rules are regularly being broken and putting childrens safety at risk.
Section 240
You MUST NOT stop or park on
- a pedestrian crossing, including the area marked by the zig-zag lines (see Rule 191)
Section 243
DO NOT stop or park
- near a school entrance
- anywhere you would prevent access for Emergency Services
- opposite or within 10 metres (32 feet) of a junction, except in an authorised parking space
- in front of an entrance to a property
- on a bend
I do wonder if there is also anything that could be done to improve the flow of traffic around this area, maybe it would benefit from a one way system, certainly something the local residents might like petition for.
If you are dropping children off at the school please allow yourself a little extra time to park a little further away. Our learner drivers are asked when choosing a place to park to consider is it safe, legal and convenient (to others). It will give you a short walk to the school and avoid the frustrations and anger of getting stuck in a very cramped area, hopefully meaning you all arrive at the school calmer and safer ready for a day of learning.
